[3.5/5]
Between The Wars straddle the fence between full-throttle thrash and pit-stomping hardcore-imagine Iron Maiden and Bold duking it out. Indeed, guitarists Bill Henderson and Jon Tarella boast that level of instrumental dexterity, with deft dueling guitars sparring off in every section of every song. The guitarwork sets Between The Wars far beyond the bigger names in today's Nike Dunk-wearing hardcore realm. (Ceremony or Have Heart would never dream of introducing a record with Spanish guitar melodies.) Death And The Sea oozes solidly constructed songs of varying floor-punch potential and air-shred capability. The NWOBHM influence is strong in "Death," while the affect of listening to lots of Hope Conspiracy is clear in "For Nothing." To boot, vocalist Tim Shaw, though not as versatile as his bandmates at his instrument, still can spit with passion and integrity. With better production (c'mon, that snare sounds like drummer Paul Colucci tapping on a paper cup), this would be among the finer hardcore records of 2007. (THINK FAST!) Casey Boland
