[3.5/5] When did it become en vogue to jerk off with your guitar? Call me as un-hip as the nameless protagonist of Billy Joel's "It's Still Rock 'N' Roll To Me," but sometimes you've got to call bullshit on the trends. Milwaukee's Call Me Lightning do just that, with better tact than a cranky music reviewer. No axe wankery, no caricatured mosh metal, just good writing. Soft Skeletons keeps the guitars moving without succumbing to fret-worrying masturbation. With crisp, intricate and energetic arrangements, Call Me Lightning leave barre chords for the couch potatoes, invoking busy-noise bands like the Minutemen, Refused and 1.6 Band. With this new, 11-track disc, the band leave behind their former home at Revelation Records for new digs at Frenchkiss; they'll be good neighbors, as several tracks on Skeletons virtually bring cookies to Les Savy Fav's house, swapping gossip and inviting them over to watch the game.
