Too short to get boring.
Autonym - Shall We Skip To Excessive Celebration?
[3/5] Autonym have both extremely good and extremely bad qualities. The good: Their songs are short, combining Minutemen, Liars and the Locust influences to pummeling, cathartic effect. Only one track out of 11 passes the 90-second mark, and that one could have been split literally in two-the first half is a herky-jerky rant, while the second half is a barrage of '80s-style electronic percussion. Also good-drummer Drew Marcogliese, whose heavy thump adds metallic gravitas to their otherwise spazzy post-hardcore sound. The bad: They're pretentious as fuck. They included a short story in their CD booklet, and vocalist Will Angelos (who wrote the aforementioned story, along with all the lyrics) is pretty much awful. When he's not hoarse, he's merely tuneless, howling arhythmically as his ace bandmates crank it up and drive it home. It would be great to hear those two do their whirling-hall-of-knives thing with a real frontman. (ALARMOR) Phil Freeman
