[5/5] On their seventh album in 13 years, Quasi's Sam Coomes (Built To Spill, Elliott Smith) and Janet Weiss (Sleater-Kinney) are still divorced, still making music together, and still sounding as poisonous as ever. Effectively mixed by producer Dave Fridmann (Sleater-Kinney, the Flaming Lips, Thursday), the music on When The Going Gets Dark is infectiously noisy, filled with multi-tracked yelping, piano-bashing and drum-pounding, and topped with a healthy dose of ear-ringing guitar feedback. Add up the ingredients, and you have the tough-love prescription for everything that's wrong with the world: a swirling storm of brainy chaos, and convoluted, paranoid rants about death, poverty and suffering.
