[4/5] Compounded by another irritant--say, headache, hangnail or annoying roommate--Kratitude's opening track, "Moving," will get you fantasizing about ringing the Seconds' necks. Fortunately, a few songs into the new album from this Yeah Yeah Yeahs/Ex Models side project, the noise acquires enough muscle and familiarity--an X-ish gallop here, a Sonic Youth-esque found melody there--to create skillful havoc that's more fun than most of the original NYC no-wave bands to which the Seconds pay tribute. Brian Chase's drumming, complemented here by Jeannie Kwon's storming bass, has the near-jazzy feel of his work in Yeah Yeah Yeahs; and though it's sometimes hard to discern from the childlike chants that top off the mix, Zachary Max's (Ex Models) guitar playing is the most versatile element here, ranging from electrical trills to warped blues licks. If nothing else, the CIA will have to use something else to flush secrets from "enemy combatants."
