The Slackers - Peculiar
Posted by Editorial Intern on 23-May-06 @ 01:35 PM

[4/5] Six albums and 15 years into the game, the Slackers prove time's winged chariot still isn't hurrying near, as the venerated NYC ska band sound as tight and focused as ever on Peculiar. They may have taken an unusual approach to recording this time around (recording live in Holland and later overdubbing vocals and horns in a New Jersey studio), but they haven't forsaken their soulful, rocksteady- and reggae-infused sound. Whether it's in the mellow grooves of "Rider" and "Capo" or the more upbeat skank-alongs of "Crazy" and the title track, Peculiar is just plain cool. Lyrically, a handful of tracks are also political in nature, as all five songs from the International War Criminal EP are present. (HELL CAT) Janelle Jones
