Sporadically inspired Detroit art rockers find life after 4AD.

His Name Is Alive - Detrola

[3/5] Over 13 years, His Name Is Alive carved out a niche of lush, flowery recordings within the storied 4AD label. Now working under the new Sony imprint Silver Mountain, HNIA leader Warn Defever's artful collective are bounding into stranger territory while retaining the dreamily sensuous female vocals (using three singers) and memorable hooks that marked their 4AD output. Detrola boasts a varied instrumental palette (mbira, bass clarinet, violin, flute, upright bass) and injects unhinged, Prince-style keyboards and Jimi Hendrix-like guitar hysterics into the group's intimate orchestral-pop matrix. It's sometimes an odd fit, but the friction sparked from these mismatched traits lends Detrola an eccentric charm. (SILVER MOUNTAIN/SONY BMG) Dave Segal
