Blasphemy made flesh?
Cryptosy - The Unspoken KingPosted by Jennifer Grathwol on 27-Aug-08 @ 01:17 PM
[3/5] Usually, it's relatively easy to replace a death-metal vocalist, even one as iron-throated and awesomely monikered as Cryptopsy's Lord Worm, because of the interchangeable nature of guttural roars. New singer Matt McGachy assimilates nicely during Unspoken King's first three tunes, disgorging grunts with violent force over blast beats and arpeggiated guitar solos. However, in a stunning twist, McGachy starts wailing like Mike Patton during the fourth track ("Bemoan The Martyr"). He uses this melodic approach during five of the next six selections, his voice occasionally silhouetted against symphonic backdrops from the group's other recent addition, keyboardist Maggy Durand. McGachy possesses a clear voice tinged with mysticism, more reminiscent of System Of A Down's Serj Tankian than metalcore's emo-style chorus-crooners. His talent does little to cushion the shock, but his range expands the territory this technically proficient band can cover. Sometimes the cost of progress is a jarred fanbase.
