Jane’s Addiction linchpin clumsily exercises his inner Comsat Angel

Eric Avery - Help Wanted

[2.5/5] It's an open secret that Eric Avery was the center of gravity within Jane's Addiction, subtly steering the songs away from the opposing chasms of punk breakdown and funk monotony with tightly channeled, hyper-intelligent rhythmic aggression and precision. On his official solo debut, he takes a more darkly atmospheric tack, indulging a moody and impressionistic Anglophilic edge. On "Belly Of An Insect," the effect is pretty cool, and his murky post-punk vocal stylings seem to fit. As the album unwinds, however, Avery's harsh voice grates and you realize that for all his better traits, he's just not a great singer. By "Walk Through Walls," you begin to turn against the album, choking on the narrow tones, thin tempos and lack of open sonic spaces that suggest too much time alone in a studio. Despite some admirable moments, the title just might say it all. (DANGERBIRD) Rick Flintlock
