Upstart Mississippians plunder from the best
Colour Revolt - Plunder, Beg And CUrsePosted by Laila Hanson on 05-Jun-08 @ 12:35 PM
[3/5]With its chiming guitars and copious religious references, Colour Revolt's inaugural full-length Plunder, Beg, And Curse recalls early U2, without Bono's bombast. Even when he rants in spoken-word cadence, poses Big Questions ("If God is good, why can't I be?") and shouts himself raspy, singer Jesse Coppenbarger maintains a sense of preternatural calm, not to mention unpretentious cool. During "Innocent And All," a gorgeous fusion of Yeah Yeah Yeahs' "Maps" and Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game," Coppenbarger uses a whispery delivery that's so seductive, it makes "she was such a hound" seem like a romantic refrain. Patrick Addison's basslines pump warm-blooded grooves into icy-veined tracks, and the band's crackling proto-grunge riffs (reminiscent of Pixies and nascent rock-era Radiohead) provide noisy catharsis after moody, muted verses. Plunder might end up being Colour Revolt's Pablo Honey, a solid debut that looks rudimentary only in comparison with the masterpieces to follow.
