Decemberists! Unplugged
Colin Meloy - Colin Meloy Sings Live!Posted by Laila Hanson on 05-Jun-08 @ 11:15 AM
[4/5]Describing Colin Meloy's solo record as "pretentious" is a grave mistake. (Yes, despite the album's campy, Broadway-esque title and the fact that it's a solo record from the lead singer of the Decemberists-a band whose reputation for highfalutin antics precedes them.) Rich acoustic versions of Picaresque standouts "The Engine Driver" and "On The Bus Mall" are solemn but riveting, as is a twang-fluffed rendition of fan favorite "Red Right Ankle." Thankfully, Meloy's self-deprecation and warm stage demeanor keep the mood from becoming too somber. He dubs "Dracula's Daughter" "the worst song I ever wrote," lovingly introduces and names his stage props (a stuffed sheep and skull) and croons a snippet of the Smiths' "Ask" at the end of a majestic "California One/Youth And Beauty Brigade." Live! is essential listening for Decemberists obsessives-and an excellent primer for those who aren't fans just yet. (KILL ROCK STARS) Annie Zaleski Official Website: http://www.killrockstars.com
