Dead To Fall - Are You Serious?Posted by Laila Hanson on 02-Jun-08 @ 03:06 PM
[3.5/5]It's not just the hellfire riffage and vocalist Jonathan Hunt's terrifying gurgle that make Are You Serious? one of 2008's essential headbangers. It's that Dead To Fall are unpretentious enough to kick off the record with a song called "Stupid?" in which they adopt the persona of a cookie-cutter metal band. If you listen closely, you can translate Hunt's guttural grunts into a tongue-in-cheek narrative with lines like, "I've got a really original idea how I think we should end this song/End this song with a fucking breakdown." The similarly mocking "Major Rager" (in which Hunt groans, "Does anyone have a lighter?/Let's spark up these blunts!") adds an all-too-rare splash of humor to the otherwise ominous-sounding death-metal bombardment that is DTF's forte. Between the unlikely laughter/brutality pairing and the album's wicked overall shred factor, Are You Serious? is actually a pretty serious record, in a not-so-serious kinda way.
