Initially forming when a few members were in eighth grade, the indie-pop outfit had an album recorded and ready to be released when the members began pulling away after graduation. The three who remained, however, set out to rebuild last July, enlisting classmate and vocalist Jessica Leplon (who got her start singing in school musicals). The band returned to the studio this past fall and re-recorded with Leplon at the front, emerging with a new identity. "Everything is completely different from the old album," says guitarist/pianist Chris Petrosino. "Lyrics are changed, there are new songs added. It's definitely a very different record." WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: The sextet, who toured this Spring with Zolof The Rock And Roll Destroyer and Jet Lag Gemini, happily present their hooky pop on their Tragic Hero debut with a nod to their school jazz band and dueling boy-girl vocals. "We have this jazz influence that sets us apart, and I think Jessica's voice is really unique," says Petrosino. "She's classically trained, which is kind of different." Where the band live (just outside of Poughkeepsie, New York), they're the biggest pop stars around. "Our record was the top- selling album in our hometown store for a while," Petrosino says, laughing. "We were right next to Ashanti's new album." -Emily Zemler YOU LIKE?
