HQ: Phoenix, AZ NOW PLAYING: Ceilings (EQUAL VISION; equalvision.com) THE STORY SO FAR: Fate's a funny thing. When Arizona's Goodbye Tomorrow first met vocalist Travis Bryant, he was on one of the final tours with his soon-to-be-defunct indie outfit Terminal. That meeting paid off when Goodbye Tomorrow needed a frontman in 2006. By that summer, the melodic collective had inked with Equal Vision Records and finished work on a three-song teaser EP before changing their name to Alive In Wild Paint in late 2007. It was a new approach for fans of Bryant's former work, but as the singer says, "[It] seemed like the right place to grow." WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: The lineup now solidified with Bryant, guitarist/pianist Matt Grabe, bassist David Roat and drummer Austin Wilson and the long-gestating Ceilings available for consumption, the opportunity to know 'em is finally possible. Ceilings features slow moving, shimmering and emotive bursts of atmosphere with Bryant's comforting croon on top, which invokes ghosts of his former outfit. Straddling the line between mainstream and underground, Bryant says the band imbibed a steady diet of the Cardigans and Nada Surf during the writing process for Ceilings, which took more than a year from its original Mark Trombino-helmed recording date to see a proper release. "When the pre-order came to my girlfriend's apartment, she and I actually held a physical copy for the first time," says Bryant, "I could really take a breath."--Brian Shultz YOU LIKE?
